CALDWELL COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -
The family of a northwest Missouri woman said they are trying to focus on their good memories. Authorities in Caldwell County identified the remains of Carol Thompson last week.
Thompson's remains were found April 7 just a mile and half away from the rural home where she lived with her boyfriend. As her family waits for answers as to what led to her death, Tuesday they spoke out for the first time since the discovery was made.
Thompson, 50, disappeared on June 15 at the home she shared with her boyfriend, about eight miles east of Lathrop, MO. He, along with frantic family and friends, searched the area but never found her.
After 10 months of worry, a walker discovered skeletal remains near a creek not far from the home. Authorities confirmed they belonged to Thompson.
Her son said he is frustrated he missed searching that very spot.
"We were maybe possibly 300 feet from her, and that's just nerve-racking really. It sucks," Corey Thompson said.
The family said Carol Thompson had heart problems and other medical issues that may have made her disoriented the night she vanished. But authorities want to make sure no foul play was involved, so her remains have been sent to a lab in Texas for tests to determine exactly how she died.
"I would hate to think, and of course those thoughts have crossed our mind a million times, that someone hurt such a beautiful person," Judy Courtney, Carol Thompson's sister, said.
For now, the family said they are focused on the fact that Carol Thompson is no longer missing and they want to celebrate her life.
"It hurts to know that she was that close, that close," Jessica Thomas, Carol Thompson's niece, said. "I think what we need from the community is thoughts and prayers for peace within our family, for the healing process, that's where we stand right now."
The family said they are grateful for all the community support they have received, so they are inviting the community to a special memorial service for Carol Thompson this Saturday. It will be held at 1 p.m. at the Pleasant Valley Baptist Church, located at 1600 N. 291st Hwy. in Liberty, MO.
