KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A good Samaritan, shot while trying to help a stranger in a robbery, is now inspiring more acts of kindness.

Newly released police calls play out the moments after 33-year-old Haroon Yousef was shot outside the Food Shop convenience store on the corner of Gregory Boulevard and Cleveland Avenue Wednesday.

"Shots fired, shots fired, Gregory and Cleveland, I've got a black male running westbound," an officer said over one call.

The man running turned out to be 19-year-old Murad Jones. He is now in custody and charged with first-degree robbery, assault and armed criminal action. Jones is accused of stealing a woman's purse in the convenience store's parking lot, then shooting Yousef when he came out to try and help the woman.

The story of a good Samaritan's sacrifice moved one of his favorite customers to try to help.

"He called me 'Mom' because he says I look just like this mother," Veronica Coleman said. "We need to step up to the plate and come to this man's aid since he came to somebody else's aid and almost lost his life."

Coleman is starting a fund to help with Yousef's medical expenses and support for his pregnant wife.

"We've gotten to the point where we're lost. We're kind of like, ‘oh wow' and we'll turn the other way and go on, but people need to start stepping up," Coleman said.

Coleman said Yousef is the type of man to step up and now it's the public's turn to help him. He's recovering from two bullets to the abdomen, but doing much better, Coleman said after she visited him in the hospital.

"He heard my voice, opened up his eyes smiled and said 'Mom,'" she said.

Now, as he grows stronger, the community can step up to show they're stronger than one criminal's actions, to show it one donation at a time.

The fund is set up under the name Haroon Yousef. People can donate at any Academy Bank branch.
