Fire and gas crews are on the scene of a gas leak in downtown Kansas City, KS.

About 1:30 p.m., construction crews working at the intersection of 7th Street Trafficway and Minnesota Avenue hit a gas line, which began leaking. The leak was capped about 30 minutes later.

Businesses in the 600 to 700 block of Minnesota, including the non-profit agency El Centro and the civilian employees of the Kansas City, KS, police department, were evacuated.

The KCK fire department said the leak was in an open construction hold, but the evacuations were ordered as a precaution.

Firefighters along with gas company workers were on the scene as they worked to shut the gas off and get the leak repaired. After they got the gas leak capped, officials went into each business to test gas levels. Once that is complete, they will allow people to go back into the businesses.
