Urgent bridge repairs reduce NB I-35 near downtown to 1 lane

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Urgent bridge repairs have reduced lanes on northbound Interstate 35 near downtown Tuesday morning.

Missouri Department of Transportation officials said I-35 just before the ramp to Broadway is reduced to one lane at the north end of the Southwest Trafficway Bridge for the next 12 to 24 hours for urgent repairs.

Motorists are urged to seek an alternate route to avoid significant delay.

MoDOT said a steel expansion joint that connects two portions of the bridge became dislodged early Tuesday morning.

The unexpected event required crews to shift all traffic to the far left lane.

"We had already reduced northbound I-35 in this location to two lanes for construction," MoDOT senior construction inspector Mike Frizzell said. "Further reducing it to one lane is not something that we expected to have to do."

Motorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes to include I-635, I-435 or 18th Street to U.S. 71 until two lanes can be restored in the work zone.
