The Independence School Board has selected Dr. Dale Herl as the new superintendent.
This comes after former superintendent Jim Hinson crossed the state line to take the job as superintendent of schools for the Shawnee Mission district.
"I could not believe more strongly in the Independence School District, and am honored to lead what I consider to be the most talented and motivated staff in the metropolitan area," Herl said.
Ann Franklin, president of the Independence School District Board of Education, said the school board is confident that Herl is the right person to lead the district and build on the foundation that Hinson put in place.
"We feel very fortunate that we had an extraordinarily strong candidate who has already shown great leadership ability here in the Independence School District. Dr. Herl has proven to be very committed to our district and to the community," Franklin said.
Since joining the district in 2009, Herl has served as deputy superintendent, overseeing finances and operations.
"It would not be easy for anyone to follow in the footsteps of Dr. Hinson, but I consider myself lucky to have worked with him side-by-side for the past several years. I consider it part of my duty to protect and grow the gains he has made in shaping this district into one of which our staff, students, parents, and community can be proud," Herl said.
The district said that during difficult economic times, Herl found "innovative ways of ensuring the Independence School District would remain on solid financial ground."
"His foresight and long-range planning abilities will continue to serve him in his new position," the district said in a new release.
Prior to becoming a part of the Independence School District, Herl served as superintendent in the Burrton (Kansas) School District, where changes he made in curriculum and instruction resulted in dramatic test score gains that garnered national attention.
