? Newtown Action Alliance getting ready to start reading more than 3,000 shooting victims names.
NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -
A group of Newtown residents who formed after the Dec. 14 tragedy at Sandy Hook are pushing congressional leaders to change guns laws.
Newtown Action Alliance is trying to raise awareness about gun violence by reading more than 3,000 names of the people who have been killed by a gun since the shooting at Sandy Hook.
On Dec. 14, 20 children and six adults were shot and killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
"We're very disappointed that we can't even get a vote after something so tragic in Newtown," said Po Murray of Newtown Action Alliance.
Around 1 p.m. Wednesday, victims and survivors of gun violence are gathering to participate in Filibuster the Filibuster: They Deserve a Vote in Washington D.C. and at the same time a group will gather in Newtown to Filibuster the Filibuster: Newtown Deserves a Vote.
Officials with Newtown Action Alliance said the purpose of the filibuster is to demonstrate to the United States Senators that any attempt to stop a vote on measure to reduce gun violence is not acceptable.
Outside the historic Edmond Town Hall, the names of 3,345, who have been killed since the shooting at Sandy Hook, were read by members of Newtown Action Alliance while the bells chimed in the background.
"We need to raise the bar in respect to some of these high power weapons, large capacity magazines," said Tripp Killin of Newtown Action Alliance.
The volunteers will continue to read the names aloud in front of the town hall until the planned vote on Thursday.
