Building in Waldo allows people to rent desk space, conference rooms

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

It's not easy for a person to start their own business or work on their own, but there's something new in Waldo that's designed to help.

It's not exactly a typical office setting. There are desks and copy machines, but instead of cramped cubicles, there are plush armchairs, and instead of bland artificial lighting, natural sunlight floods the work space.

"There would be dirty dishes in the sink, the dogs would be barking, there's always laundry to do. There's too many distractions," said Melissa Saubers, of Cowork Waldo.

Saubers always thought working from home would be ideal, but soon realized she wasn't getting much work done. So she dreamed up Cowork Waldo. It allows do-it-yourselfers to rent a desk for a day, a week, a month or longer. The setup allows them to avoid the full expense of an entire office while they still get the benefits of a professional setting to call their own.

"You can have the address for mailing purpose, for meeting clients or partners," Saubers said. "It brings your professionalism up a notch."

The space is located near 75th Street and Wornal Road in the Waldo neighborhood. It's been up and running since February and is catching on.

"I've got two kids. There's a lot of in-service days at school, a lot of sick days, a lot of those things that come up," said Bridget Moen, who rents a desk at Cowork Waldo.

Moen just started a new job for a California-based company. She thought working from home would be great, but quickly realized she needed a quiet space to work the phones.

"For me, I need conference rooms a lot. I spent today probably five hours on the phone, so I will take a conference room when I need it," Moen said.

Like any good office space, there's also a break room, and Saubers said people might just meet their next client while pouring some coffee.

"Maybe they do web development and you need web development. You've got an automatic partnership and you have a resource you wouldn't have had," she said.
