A potent storm system is bringing strong to possibly severe thunderstorms to the Kansas City area on Tuesday night, the National Weather Service says.

The thunderstorms reached the Kansas City area shortly before 10 p.m.

The storms reached the western edges of the KCTV5 viewing area by 7 p.m. and it could be as late as midnight before the eastern areas feel the brunt of the storm.

Isolated tornadoes are looking even less likely than earlier in the day when even those chances were low. Suchan said that's great news heading through the night.

Suchan said the quick developing storms are capable of producing hail with gusty winds as they march to the north. A few cells could produce severe hail upwards of .75″ to 1.25″ in diameter.

Gulf moisture and a strong cold front are fueling the storms in parts of the country, the NWS predicts.

The spring storm moving into western and northern Kansas is packing high winds, freezing drizzle and some snow.

The National Weather Service on Tuesday issued a winter weather advisory for several counties in western and northern Kansas. Forecasts call for light snow across the region, with freezing drizzle and winds gusts from about 30 mph to about 55 mph.

Forecasts also called for 1 to 2 inches of snow, but the snow and high winds were expected to end by late Tuesday.

Sam Beeson, dispatcher for the Cheyenne County Sheriff's Department in northwest Kansas, says roads in that area were icing up early Tuesday. He says there were reports of tornadoes in the area late Monday and early Tuesday, but no damage or injuries were reported.

At 8:30 p.m. the east and westbound lanes of Interstate 70 closed from the Colorado/Kansas state line to Goodland (Exit 17), due to poor visibility – caused by high winds and blowing snow conditions, according to the Kansas Department of Transportation.
