FLINT, MI (WNEM) -

Citizens Bank has been a fixture in the city of Flint for years.

But now, with the pending sale of the company, it appears the bank's days are numbered.

Wesley Shelby has fond memories of trips to Citizens Bank with his father and grandmother when he was younger. He said news that the bank, founded in 1871, might soon be a thing of the past is sad, but not a shock.

"As the country downsizes a lot of changes are happening, so we just have to adapt," said Shelby.

Friday, Citizens' shareholders approved the sale of the Flint bank to FirstMerit Bank based in Ohio. The move was one of the last steps needed to make the acquisition a done deal.

Representatives for FirstMerit said the sale should have a minimal effect on local jobs. But they are being tight-lipped about how it could affect the current look of the banks. Some hope the weather ball on top of the Citizen's building in downtown Flint will survive.

"It's been around ever since I can remember. Three and 4 years old riding down the e-way. My mom would point it out to me saying, 'That's the weather ball, It's blue, so it's going to be colder.' So, I would be sad to see that go," said Citizens' customer Emanuel Lopez.

A spokesperson for FirstMerit Bank said they anticipate closing the acquisition by the end of the business day this Friday, April 12, 2013.
