The Wyandotte County District Attorney Jerome Gorman announced he has filed two attempted first-degree murder charges against a 23-year-old woman.Johnna Green is accused of attempting to drown her daughtersMore >
A mother accused of trying to drown her two young daughters is expected to make her first court appearance Friday afternoon. The girls remain in critical condition at an area hospital.
Two young girls are improving as their mother is now on suicide watch after she allegedly tried to drown them.
The family of Johnna Green has hired former Johnson County District Attorney Paul Morrison to serve on her defense team.
Morrison met with Green Thursday night. Green was in court Friday morning for a custody hearing about guardianship of her children while she made her first appearance in her criminal case later Friday afternoon.
Green faces two attempted first-degree murder charges. Authorities say she tried to drown her daughters Tuesday night inside her KCK home.
Attorney John DeMarco, who along with Morrison is representing Green, said the girls, who are at the University of Kansas Hospital's intensive care unit, are showing signs of improvement.
"They're doing better, which is making us all very happy," he said. "They are doing a lot better."
Green is struggling. Authorities said they didn't take her to the courthouse for her first appearance for her own safety. Instead, she appeared via video.
Her attorneys declined to discuss her mental state.
DeMarco said there are many facts in the case that have not been revealed.
"These cases often have more to them than what they appear and we're just making sure she gets a fair trial and a fair shake," DeMarco said. "There's always more to the facts than what you first see. That's always the case. It's not uncommon. We just want a fair shake and all the facts to come out."
Attorneys and a judge will decide next week the dates for upcoming court appearances.
Green is being held on a $1 million bond.
