Family of gunned down 14-year-old: 'Do not harm anyone'

Posted: Updated:

The family of a 14-year-old shot and killed over the weekend spoke to the media Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. outside of their home.

"His mom is asking ... 'in honor of Miguel, let Miguel rest in peace and let's everybody go on with their own lives,'" said the boy's uncle, Jorge Barbosa.

His uncle spoke on the front porch of the family's home at 14th Street and Tauromee Avenue, asking his peers to stop talking trash and threatening more violence.

Miguel Garcia was shot shortly before 2:30 p.m. Saturday near 14th Street and Armstrong Avenue, just down the street from his house, while he was walking with another boy.

Police believe a Ford Explorer with two men inside pulled up next to two boys and, after an argument, the SUV came back and the people inside started shooting. Miguel was hit and died later at the hospital.

Since then, apparently there has been talk on the internet that troubles Miguel's family.

"Please respect our wishes and do not harm anyone. We ask that you not ... vicious talk. We wish to let Miguel rest in peace," Barbosa said.

Miguel was an eighth-grader at Central Middle School and the youngest of four. On Monday, his family spoke about him and said he loved his family, and was especially close to his mother.

A vigil will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. at the site of the shooting.

A Facebook page has been set up in Miguel's honor. Click here to read messages left for him.
