Traffic stop leads to Pinal County smuggling bust

PINAL COUNTY, AZ (CBS5) -

A traffic stop led Pinal County Sheriff's deputies to a "stash" house on the Tohono O'odham National, where they found 567 pounds of marijuana and 10 illegal immigrants Sunday.

Deputies and members of the West Desert Task Force stopped a vehicle believed involved in drug smuggling operations on State Route 84 near Stanfield about 9:30 a.m. Sunday, said Tamara Ingersoll of the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies detained the driver and members of the task force linked the vehicle to a house in Cockleburr Village on the reservation, where the 10 illegal immigrants and pot were found in a shed, Ingersoll said.

Nine of the 10 individuals were booked into the Pinal County Adult Detention Center on charges of possession of marijuana, Ingersoll said, and the 10th person could not be linked to the marijuana.

The pot was turned over to the U.S. Border Patrol, Ingersoll said.

The West Desert Task Force compiles the Pinal County Sheriff's Office, Tucson Sector Border Patrol, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
