LAURENS, SC (FOX Carolina) -
Firefighters in Laurens County batted a blaze at one of their own fire stations on Thursday, but the department and its equipment inside were lost.
A spokesman with Laurens County Fire Services said Ekom Fire Department on Neely Ferry Road caught fire with their trucks still inside. Fire departments from the surrounding areas were called in to battle the fully involved blaze.
At one point, the entire building was on fire with flames shooting through the roof.
"I heard three different explosions one kind of right after the other," said Dallas Alridge, who lives near the fire department.
Firefighters at the scene said two engines, a tanker, a brush truck and a service truck were lost in the blaze. They said the station had just recently received several grants to acquire equipment that is now lost.
With the building destroyed, officials said the plan is to open a temporary location about a mile down the road with the help of nearby fire departments.
"They've worked and slaved for years to have this, but it is insured and it will be rebuilt," said Laurens County Fire spokesman Greg Lindley.
There is no word yet on the extent of the fire or what sparked it. The fire is under investigation by the State Law Enforcement Division.
