Kansas Citians battle never-ending winter weather

Posted: Updated:

Some pitiful pansies are taking a pounding outside the Family Tree Nursery in Overland Park.  But inside, it is a different story.

"It's always springtime here in the greenhouse," horticulturalist Greg Schroer said.

With green everywhere and flowers of all kinds in bloom, it is a welcome escape for children on spring break, eager to shed their winter gear and the blues that sometimes come with it.

"Very nice, it feels like that I'm actually in springtime, not winter," Aurora Nicol said.  "I am just sick of snow."

Schroer said the lack of sunlight and lack of oxygen and fresh air will certainly bring people down.

"The cloudy weather will bring people down. That's why it's always good to come here and walk around, even just to make yourself feel better," Schroer said

And if that's not enough, how about dialing it up to 127 degrees?

The Sunlight Day Spa in Overland Park offers even closer contact with - almost - sunlight, with infrared sauna therapy, the same technology as a baby's incubator.

"No UV rays, so you don't get any of the harmful effects of the sun, you get the natural, healthy effects," said Brooke Taylor, marketing manager of Sunlight Day Spa.

The spa is doing big business right now.

"Just with the spring that is taking so long to get here and people are kind of done with the snow and the cold and want to feel the warmth of the sun," Taylor said.

However, they can get it.
