A train hit a van in Salem and police said it all started with a man eating a hamburger.

Salem police said John Berry, 34, drove onto the railroad tracks near Boone Road and Eastland Avenue Southeast at 10:30 p.m. Sunday.

Investigators said he hit a cable that is supposed to stop drivers from driving onto the tracks.

The airbags in Berry's van then deployed.

The van was stuck as an Amtrak train barreled down toward it. Salem police said Berry got out before the collision.

Officers said no passengers on board the train were injured. The train was delayed for 90 minutes.

The crash also brought down a power line.

Berry was cited for careless driving. Investigators believe he was speeding at the time of the initial crash, but they also believe he was distracted by his dinner.

Police said Berry was eating a Carl's Jr. hamburger when he hit the railroad cable.

Salem police said Union Pacific is also conducting an investigation and will forward their findings onto the district attorney's office to determine if more charges will be filed.
