The KCTV5 StormTrack5 weather team has been certified the "most accurate forecast" for the second straight year by WeatheRate for television stations in Kansas City.
WeatheRate is an independent company that tracks television forecast accuracy. It looks at different parts of the forecast, including high and low temperatures, precipitation, severe weather and snow predictions. Then, it rates the accuracy of each station's forecast.
From March 2012 to February 2014, the KCTV5 StormTrack5 weather team was rated the most accurate in Kansas City.
Weather team members are proud for the honor in an area known for its fast and often challenging weather.
Along with Suchan, meteorologists Gary Amble, Hallie Shulman and Tom Wachs make up the StormTrack5 weather team. All meteorologists are certified by the American Meteorological Society or the National Weather Association. They are the only
Combined, they have nearly 60 years of experience covering tornadoes, blizzards, ice storms and floods.
The StormTrack 5 team had such a commanding lead that WeatherRate made the announcement before the rating period officially ends later this month because it was mathematically impossible for another station to catch up.
"I'm proud of the team because it means we're getting it right consistently and more often than our competition," Suchan said. "In this part of the country, conditions change rapidly and sometimes 10 miles can mean the difference between an inch of snow and a blizzard or a dangerous tornado and blue skies. Our daily goal is to make sure our viewers are prepared for what Mother Nature is bringing to our area."
KCTV5 news director Larry Perret said the distinction shows how good the team is at predicting complex weather systems.
"I believe we have the best weather team in town. They are dedicated, knowledgeable and have a passion for the science of meteorology and they're experts at communicating their knowledge in a way that everyone can understand," Perret said. "They're committed to getting it right and making sure our viewers know what to expect when they walk out their door."
