KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
The calendar says spring, but the third major snowstorm in a month has arrived in Kansas City.
Heavy snowflakes began falling by mid-afternoon Saturday. Roads are wet and caution is advised when traveling.
The National Weather Service is warning residents to be prepared. The NWS issued a winter storm warning from 7 p.m. Saturday until 7 p.m. Sunday.
Area road crews are gearing up to treat roads while area transportation entities advise motorists to avoid traveling during the snowstorm.
The snow is expected to begin piling up by Saturday night with the biggest accumulations coming during the overnight hours, KCTV5 Meteorologist Gary Amble says.
The snow will wind down by early Sunday afternoon.

KCTV5 Chief Meteorologist Chris Suchan predicts that 4 to 8 inches of snow will fall over a wide area covering from St. Joseph to Cameron and from Leavenworth to Kansas City. Areas south/southeast of Kansas City, including Harrisonville, Belton, Warrensburg, Sedalia and Clinton, will likely see 6 to 10 inches.
This will be a heavy, wet snow, Suchan says. Due to the winds, some outages are possible.
Grocery stores and other retailers were packed Saturday with customers stocking up ahead of the snow.
Kansas City municipal crews are mobilized for the storm.
Drivers began their route at by late morning Saturday. Shifts of employees will work nonstop until Monday morning. Residential streets are being treated until nightfall. The clearing of snow on residential streets will resume at 6 a.m. and last until 6 p.m.
The Missouri Department of Transportation has issued a travel advisory for this weekend. MODOT says some areas will see as much as three inches of snow in an hour.
"MODOT will be plowing around the clock to keep interstates and major highways passable," according to a news release. "This storm's intensity poses particularly high risk for travelers due to both the high rate of snowfall and the lack of visibility."
MODOT pledged to work through Monday to ensure roads are passable for the morning rush hour.
Motorists should stay back from snow plows and never pass them.
"This storm is expected to be as challenging as the two in late February," said Dan Niece, district engineer. "Your safety is our first priority. Stay put, do not travel once this snowstorm begins until it has passed."
The Kansas Department of Transportation sounded a similar warning.
"Although recent days of warm weather have given Kansans a taste of spring, winter is not over and the public is reminded to keep themselves prepared for winter storms," the agency said.
Winds will create blowing snow across Kansas roads, the state says.
Mercy Church said they are offering free snow removal for single mothers, widows, and elderly in Kansas City metro. If you would like to receive the free snow removal, call 913-390-1200. The church warned that they may not be able to get to everyone, but they'll help as many as can.
The NCAA said in a written statement, despite the snow, they do not expect any men's basketball championship game delays. But they do encourage everyone to take the necessary precautions on Sunday.
"We encourage fans planning to attend games to pay attention to the weather, use good judgment and follow any directions from local authorities regarding travel and weather," they said.
