KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are investigating after a 68-year-old man died Wednesday in the Union Station parking garage.

Authorities said the man was pinned between a toll booth and garage pillar when he accidentally dropped his parking money at a toll booth and leaned down to retrieve it.

The man had stopped his white Ford 150 pickup to pay the toll when he dropped his money, Kansas City police said.

Police said that is when he then inadvertently hit the gas in his truck.

"It appears the driver opened, then leaned out the driver's door to retrieve the money and that the vehicle lurched forward causing the door to close and pin the driver," police said.

This occurred just before noon Wednesday at the Union Station parking garage near Pershing Road and Main Street.

According to police, the man was leaving Science City with his 5-year-old granddaughter and her friend. Both were wearing seatbelts.

Some witnesses saw the accident and were able to get the children from the vehicle and managed to move the truck to unpin the victim.

The man died at the scene from his injuries, police said. The little girl and her friend weren't harmed.

Repairs were being made Wednesday to the gate and toll booth at the garage. It wasn't immediately clear whether the toll booth was manned or not.

The man was identified as Leonard A Prestia of Gladstone.
