Derron Black unsuccessfully ran for a Missouri House seat last year and apparently had at least one outburst during that campaign, allegedly requiring security to escort him from a meeting.
But that's nothing like Tuesday when he rushed onto the stage at the Gem Theatre as Mayor Sly James was delivering his State of the City address and began cursing. Black was taken into custody and charges are expected.
Police have not officially confirmed Black's identity, but KCTV5 spoke with numerous sources who recognized Black.
His family declined comment. Black is not married and has a young child. Black's sister was picking up the child from school since Black was in police custody Tuesday afternoon.
The Missouri House seat was won by Randy Dunn in a three-man race that included Black.
While Black launched a profanity-fueled tirade that included criticism of James, his harshest words were for Councilman Jermaine Reed.
"Rescue my city and fire the (expletive) council in my name," Black yelled when asked his name. "City Councilman Reed can't even show up to city-appointed meetings. He can't even be there to govern his own (expletive) city."
According to Black's Facebook page, he graduated from Westport High School and works at the Ford assembly plant.
He posted pictures of himself with political figures including U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, a Democrat from Kansas City, Cleaver's wife, barbecue baron Ollie Gates and Missouri Rep. Brandon Ellington.
"Past, Present and Future...Please Believe...Peace to All who follow the guidance of truth, justice and equality FOR ALL!" Black wrote on one of the pictures.
During a campaign appearance last year, he said, "Love yourself. Love your neighbor. And if you're a black man, you can't be afraid to love your younger brother."
Reed said he was shocked by Black's outburst. He said they had exchanged pleasantries in the parking lot before James' address. He said he didn't know what Black was upset about.
Reed later issued the following statement:
"It is imperative that our focus today remains on honoring our city's progress over the past year and the blueprint for the future. The interruption was an unnecessary distraction from the Mayor's State of the City speech, and unfair to all of the event's participants. As city leaders, we cannot allow today's obscene outburst from one individual to slow our progress toward serving every single neighborhood in Kansas City. My commitment to the citizens of the Third District has been to actively engage with them first hand, to listen to their concerns and find solutions. That commitment was only strengthened today. I know the Mayor and my fellow council colleagues feel as committed as I am to achieve these goals together: to create more and better jobs, quality housing, and safe neighborhoods in the Third District."
