St. Patrick’s Day in Portland not just for the Irish

Posted: Updated:
PORTLAND, OR (KPTV) -

It was a sea of green to start the day at Tom McCall Waterfront Park as walkers and runners of all ages turned out for the Shamrock Run.

Participants showed up early for the 35th annual run, whose route threaded through downtown Portland streets and up into the Terwilliger Hills.

The Shamrock Run is just one of many St. Patrick's Day events happening (and probably the healthiest) as most other celebrations include beer, Irish dancing, live music, food…and more beer.

Some of today's events include, but are not limited to:

  • St. Patrick's Day Festival at the Thirsty Lion includes Irish dancers, food and music
  • Paddy's St. Patrick's Day Festival, including a street fair, dancing, food and music
  • Aladdin Theater St. Patrick's Day concerts
  • St. Patty's Day at East Burn, a free event featuring corned beef, cabbage and Irish music
  • "Brewcycle" through downtown aboard the human-powered group bicycle
  • Whiskey flights and Guinness during the St. Patrick's Day Slainte at the Raven & Rose

Local police agencies are gearing up as well, with extra patrols and special attention being paid to drivers under the influence.

Police are encouraging drinkers to use cabs, take public transportation, designate a driver and to take the keys if a friend appears intoxicated.
