Dump truck crashes on I-5 near Rice Hill

Posted: Updated:

A dump truck crash on Interstate 5 caused Oregon State Police to shut down northbound lanes of the freeway for several hours near Rice Hill.

OSP said the crash happened around 10:15 a.m. when the dump truck pulling a trailer ended up traveling onto the shoulder and crashing into a tree.

Troopers said the trailer carrying a backhoe became separated from the truck and continued a short distance before coming to an uncontrolled stop.

There were some vehicles in the southbound lanes that saw the crash and began to steer clear from the left lane as some thought the trailer was going to cross the freeway.

Troopers said that resulted in some minor collisions.

Several gallons of diesel fuel spilled across both northbound lanes, which resulted in ODOT shutting down that side of the freeway so crews could clean up the spill.

The driver of the truck, Alan Iverson, 30, from Kelso, was taken to a hospital in Springfield.

Officials said the passenger in the truck, Douglas White, 61, from North Bend, was taken by air ambulance to the hospital because he suffered more serious injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
