Police: driver was drunk when he collided with fire engine

Posted: Updated:

A driver was taken into custody after he smashed his car into the back of a fire engine Saturday morning.

The crash occurred in front of Vancouver Fire station #6 on Northeast 112th Avenue at about 6:30 a.m., when the engine was just returning from a call.

Police responded to the incident where they conducted a field sobriety test.  The driver didn't appear to be hurt, but was ultimately taken into custody.  His identity has not been released.

The collision mangled the car, and caused moderate damage to the fire engine. A Vancouver Fire spokesman says the engine had to be taken out of service for repairs.

Meanwhile, reserve apparatus was brought in to cover incoming fire calls.

The monetary damage to the fire engine was still being assessed.
