KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Texas Tech beat West Virginia in the first game of the Big 12 men's basketball tournament at the Sprint Center.

March basketball madness has begun, but the real fun begins Thursday when KU and Kansas State take the court.

"It's exciting," KU fan Jeremy Alpert said. "It's a fun time."

West Virginia lost its first game in the Big 12 tournament. Fellow newcomer TCU was playing Texas in the night cap.

Fans like Alpert said they appreciate that downtown Kansas City offers bars and other exciting venues for fans before and after the game.

This is the first year that Mizzou and Texas A&M aren't in the Big 12 tournament. Colorado and Nebraska previously left.

West Virginia fan Bob Robinson liked what he saw in Kansas City.

"It's really nice," he said. "It's not Madison Square Garden, but it's a close second."

While Mizzou's departure means tickets for the first rounds were easier to get, fans say a Sunflower Showdown would create excitement and outrageous ticket prices by scalpers.
