ROELAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -
A group of self-professed "senior delinquents" struck Roeland Park City Hall Tuesday night. But unlike most vandals, they left the place a little more festive than they found it.
It is different kind of bombing. This attack was done by women armed with needles and yarn.
What they left behind was art called yarn bombing, which has been popping up all over the world. The phenomenon was first spotted in 2004 and is a type of graffiti or street art that uses colorful knits rather than paint.
The group of metro women is trying to bring the trend to Kansas City.
Tucked away in a Fairway basement, the small group of women knit away the cold winter months.
"We don't let men down here very often. They have to know the password," said Sherri, who prefers to keep a little mystery behind the bombings.
The group is a spinoff of the Fiber Guild of Greater Kansas City. They wanted a club to call their own, one where all kinds of mischief just happens.
"You never know what's going to happen when you get us," Sherri said, laughing. "You just never know"
Every Tuesday, for the past 15 years, the ladies have taken their needles to yarn, looping the usual scarves and sweaters - until now.
Now, they tactically crochet tree huggers.
"Some of these that are smaller will go around smaller branches," she said.
Sherri and her entourage weave the pieces onto trees or railings, attacking anything they see with yarn.
"We're just going to go up, and when no one's looking all these little things are going to appear around the trees and railings and whatever we can decorate is going to get decorated," Sherri said. "This is supposed to be sort of an illicit operation ... like toilet papering someone's house. They aren't supposed to know.
So one has to wonder why they do it in the first place.
"Because we are senior delinquents and we can't help ourselves," she said.
It is all in good fun. The group won't get fined for it because it is easily removed.
