Parents, students fear music program cuts at Shawnee Mission schools

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Shawnee Mission School District board members got an earful from students and parents all worried possible budget cuts could put an end to their music program.

They came out in full force to make sure the band program at Shawnee Mission East was protected.

Among the ideas included cutting the band director from a full time post to part time and combining the two jazz courses into a single class.

Junior Mary Grekstas is the drum major and has been involved with the music programs her entire high school career.

She is worried younger students won't get the same benefits from a strong band program that she enjoyed.

"I know how much of a difference it made in my life, and I want to make sure it can make a difference in someone else's,"  Grekstas said.

Neal Eidemiller's two sons are also involved in band. He has seen first hand how the program helps young children develop and is worried about a loss in scholarship opportunities.

"Many of these students go on to higher levels and are able to get college based on music scholarships through band even if they aren't in music studies. That is a huge asset for them," Eidemiller said.

Several people ended up speaking before the board during the open forum.  They were all happy with the turnout and chance to be heard.

A district representative says they are doing their best in the midst of a tough time for their budget.

If any changes are made, they won't take effect until next school year.
