Mission family grateful for support after fire destroys home

Posted: Updated:
MISSION, KS (KCTV) -

A Mission family is not only thankful they survived a fire that destroyed their apartment but also to those who showed up to help.

The fire at Hillsborough Apartments destroyed eight units, but it didn't take anyone's life. And that gratitude became part of a lesson an 8-year-old girl took to school with her Wednesday.

"Once on a Tuesday at 8:04, we smelled smoke,"  said Taylor Berrian, who wrote a story about her experience to stand in for the homework that went up in smoke.

"I started to bawl my eyes out, because I just had lost everything," Taylor continues.

But two "nice ladies" in a pickup soon changed that.

"There was no one around, and they came from out of nowhere," Taylor's mom, Carrie Berrian, said. "I can't thank them enough. They were so gracious.  There's no words."

One of them, 22-year-old nursing student Claire Boldry, went knocking on doors to get people out while the Berrians waited in her car.

"It's precious time when things like that are happening," Boldry said.

Boldry and her roommate offered up their place to the Berrians and soon distracted the Taylor and her 4-year-old sister from their worry.

"They were pretty silly, and they were comforting us. And they gave us coloring books," Taylor said.

The Berrians say there are no words to describe their gratitude.

"I just feel so blessed and so grateful to them," Carrie Berrian said.

And a little caring went a long way towards a lesson just as valuable as Taylor's spelling drills.

"And we were safe. The end," Taylor said as she finished her story.

Carrie Berrian and her two daughters will be staying with her mother while they sort out what comes next. No one was seriously hurt during the fire.

Firefighters are still investigating the cause of the fire.
