The Wilcox County boys basketball team will try to win the school's first state title in 45 years Thursday in Macon when they play Wilkinson County in the Class A boys public championship game.
The Patriots feel they should be trying to repeat as state champions this season.
Coach George Kennedy and his Wilcox County Patriots are just one win away from the school's second state championship.
Even Kennedy and his players know what could have been.
"We had a good chance of winning it last year with all the athletes we had," said Johnathan Howard.
The state title run the Patriots were preparing for last season was stopped before the team even got out of the blocks.
Wilcox forfeited their first round playoff game after an off-the-court incident.
"That was very unfortunate. But when you do things, there are consequences," said George Kennedy.
But now the Patriots are back right whether they believe they have should have been last year.
"I knew we were going to have a good enough team to come back so we could go back to Macon this year," said Makhail Grace.
And after everything this team has been through Kennedy says bringing a state championship back to Rochelle would be sweet redemption.
"It is sweet. its just something beyond belief that they have gotten the opportunity to again complete a career like this," said George Kennedy.
Wilcox County plays at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at the Macon Coliseum against Wilkinson County for the GHSA Class A Public boys state basketball championship.
