Authorities are investigating an attempted murder and suicide that left a man dead and a woman in the hospital.
Police were called just before 10:30 p.m. Tuesday to a home on West 148th Terrace on the reported shooting.
When officers arrived, they found a 51-year-old woman, Tammy Johnston, who was shot in the thigh. She was taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Police also found her 52-year-old husband, Donald Johnston, who had been fatally shot. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
A 20-year-old woman called 911 just after 10 p.m. when shots inside the home rang out. She ran from the home. Neighbors said officers carrying rifles swarmed the area.
Police have not said who fired the shots.
"We feel like we have everyone identified, and we are not looking for anyone else involved," Sgt. Brad Caldwell said.
Neighbors and family friends tell KCTV5 that the couple has had marital problems in the past. Court records show that Tammy Johnston filed for divorce in October 2010, but the case was dismissed 11 months later.
The focus is now on the recovering woman and the couple's four children.
"It's really sad," said Amanda Westfall, a friend and neighbor. "We've been friends for years and it's a shock. I feel sorry for their loss."
The family has lived in the residence for some time.
