OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A man has been charged in a horrible crash that happened Monday night at a busy intersection in front of an Overland Park Jack in the Box fast-food restaurant. The crash killed one person and left another seriously injured.

Zachary Wempe is charged with involuntary manslaughter, drinking and driving and battery.

Police said Wempe was driving a pickup that slammed into an SUV. Carson Norris, 21, of Texas was in the SUV and died from his injuries. A young woman in the SUV was seriously hurt.

Overland Park police were back out on the scene of the horrific crash at 103rd and Metcalf Avenue Tuesday afternoon, trying to piece together what led up to it.

"All of a sudden - bam - you heard it. Everybody heard it. Everybody stopped. No one said a word," Jacob Trabert said.

Trabert works at Jack in the Box and called 911 to report the wreck.

"A customer in the window immediately turned to me, her eyes were huge, she says, 'Call 911,'" he said. "Luckily they were here in less than a minute. It was amazing how fast they got here."

It happened just before 11 p.m. Monday.

"The initial report was it was traveling at a high rate of speed. At this point, we're not sure. We'll continue our investigation and find out exactly what happened," Officer Gary Mason said.

"It was terrible. People started rushing out to the cars to see if everyone was OK - you just knew it was going to be very, very bad," Trabert said.

Trabert said because of the condition of the cars, he knew there wasn't much the average bystander would be able to do, but he said it made him feel better just seeing how people reacted.

"It was no longer a business with customers. We were all people and even people parked on the side of the road started running out to see if they were OK," he said.

Neither Wempe nor his passenger in the truck was hurt.
