Authorities target Northland motel after repeat violations

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Residents and guests at a Northland motel woke up to police, fire and health officials at their doors Tuesday.

Authorities say the Days Inn, located at 7100 NE Parvin Rd., is dealing with multiple health and fire code violations and even criminal activity.

According to police, the sweep is a follow-up to previous problems where officers served search warrants and found drugs and stolen property.

Police also say the particular motel was targeted because they have received multiple calls there every day. Stolen property, narcotics and inoperable smoke detectors are among the calls.

"We are here almost on a daily basis," Sgt. Danny Graves said. "Whether it be a stolen vehicle or a fugitive, search warrant or some type of complaint."

In addition to the slew of violations, authorities are also dealing with a large amount of stolen cars on the property.

According to police, three-fourths of the cars in the parking lot were not even licensed. Some were bought at an auction waiting to be picked up, while others were just abandoned. Others are stolen and they are being used to commit additional crimes.

Motel management say they are doing all they can to keep the criminal activity and are working with police to fix the health code issues.

"When you rent a room, you don't know who is coming," manager Sam Padel said. He said the fire code violations were routine issues that the motel's maintenance workers can resolve without having to involve professionals.

Graves said too many of those renting rooms are up to no good, adding authorities and management have to protect innocent people.

"You never know what's in the room next door and that's why we're trying to stay on top of it," Graves said. "It looks bad for the neighborhood."
