Greenwood mayor jumps behind snow plow to help out

GREENWOOD, MO (KCTV) -

The heaping piles of snow are slowly melting away and public works crews are still out towing it off city streets.

But there is at least one city in the area that probably is not fielding many complaints to City Hall about the snow removal situation.

The city of Greenwood, MO, is about 30 miles south of Kansas City. Once people are in town, they are not going to see many piles of snow, because it is being shoveled away by the city's mayor.

It's just another day on the job for Marvin Megee.  He has been plowing the streets of Greenwood for nearly a week after two major storms hit.

"Everything came to a halt," Megee said.

So he had to take control. After all, he is the mayor.

The city of 5,300 people only has a two-man plow crew.  Greenwood is a small town with simple values.

"When you're buried in snow, everyone has to chip in, which led to me getting out and being a part of the snow removal," Megee said.

People living in one Greenwood subdivision were snowed in for 48 hours.

"It would have been easy for me to say public works will be in at 10 a.m. tomorrow. We will put you on the list. That would have been the easy out for any mayor.  That is not how I think. That is not how I was raised," Megee said.

He got into the city bobcat and started clearing the street himself.

It came as a shock to the people living down the block who never imagined seeing the mayor clearing their streets.

"No I have not. I have not ever. It was a complete surprise," Tammy Clark said.

And he didn't stop until the job was done, opening a pathway wide enough for two cars to pass.

"He spent several hours a couple days moving snow," Clark said.

For Megee, it is rewarding, even by making a small difference.

"I'm not out to change the world, but one driveway at a time, one street at a time, I feel like I've made some little progress in the world," Megee said.

Megee doesn't even have an office in City Hall.  He said the city is his office, and he does his work out in it.
