Volunteers scour Plaza for lost dog following area explosion

Posted: Updated:

Dozens of people searched the Country Club Plaza area Sunday looking for a missing dog who has not been seen since the night of the JJ's restaurant explosion and fire.

They received their last minute instructions before commencing their search for Perceus, a two-year-old yellow lab who took running after the blast that leveled the well known restaurant Feb. 19.

The searchers were armed with leashes, treats and motivation.

"We were actually out for a walk, like right before the JJ's explosion.  And we actually crossed paths with the owner looking for his dog. The one we are going to look for today," James Aitken said.

Dr. John Verstraete's medical clinic practice is next door to JJ's. He, his employees, Perceus and a second dog were inside when the explosion occurred. While he was able to rescue one of his dogs, Perceus got scared from the loud noises and ran off.

"I'm amazed that a number of people are willing to help take time out of their day to help look for my dog. I mean, it was a tragic event that occurred, and Perceus was just caught up in it, and ran just out of just fear," Verstraete said.

Dozens of people hit the streets, covering miles.  They checked every nook, cranny and parking garage.

The volunteers out looking for Perceus also have their own reasons for aiding in the search. For some, it was personal.

"I knew Perceus from work. I worked there for two years. I just quit like a week-and-a-half before the explosion occurred. I was really close," Kelly Talmage said.

Organizations like Great Plains SPCA have been helping to return Perceus back to his owners. They have posted to their Facebook page locations where he was spotted. His owners believe he is still in the Plaza area because they recently saw a clip of the dog running in the West Plaza area.

The reward for finding Perceus is up to $1,500. If you find him, call 816-210-4942.
