Repeat DUI offender in wreck involving police officers

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A man with at least three prior driving while intoxicated arrests is accused of hitting two vehicles last week, including a vehicle carrying two off-duty police officers.

The officers were en route to Oak Park Mall where they were scheduled to work security. They were stopped at a traffic light at 95th Street and Switzer Road when a vehicle driven by Kevin Robison allegedly ran a light and plowed into a vehicle. That vehicle was pushed into the officers' car.

"The two officers got out. They had minor injuries. They figured out what was going on. At that point they tried to stop the driver, who attempted to flee the scene," Officer Gary Mason of the Overland Park Police Department said.

When Robison wouldn't obey their commands, officers became worried he would hit someone else, Mason said. He said the officers drew their weapons and pointed them at the suspect. Mason said Robison was under the influence of alcohol.

At the time of the crash, Robison had made bond after he was charged with domestic battery and violating a protection order. According to court records, Robison has had at least three prior DUIs.

Robison was required in January to wear a bracelet that detects alcohol use. That was a condition of his bond. But police say the bracelet was removed on Feb. 6.

"I think it's fortunate no one was hurt," Mason said, adding that if two officers had not been on the scene then Robison may have fled and hurt someone else.

"If they had not been there, he would have gotten away," Mason said.

Robison remains in jail on the latest charges.
