LEE'S SUMMIT, MO (KCTV) -
Dozens of residents showed up in red to Thursday night's city council meeting to protest the plan to bring a new Walmart to Lee's Summit.
The group said it's not against Walmart itself, just the traffic issues it would cause at Missouri Highway 150 and Market Street.
"We're not an anti-Walmart group, but we just feel like that Walmart's not, at this point, putting into place the infrastructure that's necessary to support the traffic at that location," said Brandi Riggs with Citizens for Responsible Development.
City Council members voted to move forward with rezoning to allow for the Walmart. It will be up for discussion again on March 14.
Walmart is officially responding to the council vote. The company said in a news release, "We are pleased by the results of tonight's vote by the city council and their support of the new Walmart Supercenter. We believe this new store offers opportunity for those that are looking for a job or want access to fresh affordable food and affordable goods. We look forward to continue to listen and work with local leaders."
