The storm may be over, but the patients have just begun piling into local hospitals.
There were three basic snow circumstances that packed ERs Friday. One of them was due to shoveling – it's a harder workout than people might think when they start plowing through it.
Michael Thomas tackled his sidewalk with vigor.
"It's a pretty good workout," he said.
He's done triathlons, but even he was panting. Many people waited until Friday to get cracking on the task and a number of them ended up in the ER.
"I think people think it's no big deal because, as a kid, you go out and shovel and you think it's just fun, but it really actually is a lot of work," said Dr. Sara Cross with the Shawnee Mission Medical Center.
The wait for non-trauma care at Shawnee Mission Medical Center was eight times the usual, up to 4 hours.
Another culprit for ER visits was slick spots with both people slipping and cars crashing. The roads were worse on day one, but a snow bank has a lot more give than another car.
"Yesterday everyone was going very slow and they were kind of the slide-off-the-road-type of injury - this is more serious car accidents," Cross said.
There's also still a day three impact anticipated as visitors move from ankle sprains to back pains – that is unless people use the technique Michael Thomas does.
"Try to use my legs. That's not the easiest to do over and over again but try to minimize the strain on my back," Thomas, of Prairie Village, said.
Saturday people may be visiting the ER because that's when they'll feel the effects of Friday's work.
