ROELAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Although people may want to head out in the treacherous conditions to stock up on food, water and other supplies, they may not be able get to their favorite grocery store.

Many stores have closed down Thursday - some because of low traffic and others because employees couldn't make it in to work.

All Constentino's Price Choppers are closed.

Ball's Price Choppers are closing early, but their closing times will vary from store to store.

An employee at the Price Chopper off of State Avenue and North 43rd Street said too many people called in because they can't get to work, so they have no one to keep the store running after a certain point. The employee also said she can't get out of her store's parking lot and she doesn't know how long she and her fellow employees will be stuck there.

Some customers were able to get to the Roeland Park, KS, Price Chopper location by car, but others had to walk because the roads were too difficult to drive on.

Because of the steady stream of shoppers, the store at Roe Avenue and 18th Street Expressway near Skyline Drive hired crews to clear out the parking lot and shovel the entrance. It was one of a handful of metro supermarkets that remained open which proved to be a huge convenience for shoppers.

"My kid wanted cereal and a pineapple upside down cake, so I got her that. We needed to get her out of the house because of cabin fever. It worked out," Joe Berger said.

The Roeland Park Price Chopper is closing at 6 p.m. Thursday instead of 11 p.m.

Below are other area grocery stores and their hours:

  • Mission Hy-Vee - Staying open normal 24 hours.
  • Hy-Vee at 87th Street and Pflumm Road in Lenexa - Some departments will close earlier than normal, but the main store will stay open for its normal 24 hours.
  • Hy-Vee at 91st and Glenwood streets in Overland Park - Staying open normal 24 hours.
  • Hy-Vee at 76th Street and State Line Road in Prairie Village - They have a shortage of employees, but are staying open the normal 24 hours.
  • Hen House Markets said it was a corporate decision to close all of their grocery stores at 6 p.m. Thursday.
