LEAWOOD, KS (KCTV) -
Two buildings were immediately evacuated in Leawood after a construction company ruptured a gas line.
Additional buildings have been evacuated. A total of seven structures have now been evacuated.
Authorities believe a construction company digging in the area ruptured the 4-inch line. The buildings at 136th Street and Roe Avenue have been evacuated as a precaution.
Authorities said a very heavy odor of gas was in the area, and it was decided it was best to order the evacuations. Officials said in light of the explosion at a Plaza restaurant after a gas leak that they didn't want to take any chances.
This occurred just after 3 p.m. Wednesday. The leak was mostly contained by 4:30 p.m. but work will take some time to completely contain the leak.
