OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A man who was barricaded inside a subdivision in Overland Park has shot himself, police said.

The man was rushed to the hospital with a serious injury.

Police had surrounded the residence at 97th Street and Walmer Street.

Police were called to the home about 12:50 p.m. Tuesday on report of a burglary in progress. When officers arrived, they determined that the homeowner was inside and armed.

Officers surrounded the home and closed off nearby roads. The police were unable to contact the man.

Officers heard a gunshot and rushed inside about 2:45 p.m. They discovered the man inside with the single gunshot wound.

Nearby John Diemer Elementary School in the Shawnee Mission School District was placed on lockdown as a precaution, police said. Shawnee Mission School District officials had said the school was not on lockdown but just placed on alert, but police said that was not correct.
