KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Many people are turning to controversial homeopathic options to stay sickness-free during flu season.
"I try to help people build their natural pharmacy so they have a medicine cabinet that has extra Zinc, that has extra Vitamin C," Lisa Everett said.
Everett is the co-owner of the Kansas City Holistic Centre & O'Brien Pharmacy. She said this flu season has been especially busy even for those that have gotten a flu shot.
"What we have seen is that some of the people that are the sickest with the flu this year are those who've been vaccinated," she said.
Everett takes a more natural approach to staying healthy, but said that supplements aren't the only element affecting how people's immune systems perform. She said some of people's habits also play a big role.
"Eating whole foods rather than a lot of sugar. Sugar really suppresses the immune system. Bad fats really suppress the immune system. Too much alcohol suppresses the immune system and not enough sleep suppresses the immune system," she said.
Along with vitamins and good habits, Everett recommends a more controversial approach to not getting the flu – by not getting the flu show and instead taking a very specific pill.
"It's a little bit of the snake that bit you. It's the idea that we use in vaccines, it's just without all the chemicals. It's a little bit of the actual virus attenuated and then put into alcohol and water," Everett said.
One concern Dr. Lee Norman, the chief medical officer at the University of Kansas Hospital, has with homeopathic medicine is a lack of oversight.
"They are not FDA regulated, so they don't have to do research about safety and effectiveness of the medications," Norman said.
But Everett is a believer in homeopathy and said her customers have seen long-term results.
"People say that, ‘I haven't had a cold or the flu or any vaccines ever since I started taking these supplements that are just for good health,'" she said of what her customers tell her.
