A crook gained thousands of dollars by stealing from rent drop boxes at two Shawnee apartment complexes.
The crook hit on Feb. 3, which is when many renters drop off their rent payments. Most landlords typically require payment by Feb. 4.
The Carlyle and Pinegate West apartment complex were targeted. The Carlyle is at 75th Street and Quivira Road while Pinegate is at 65th Street and Nieman Road.
"This is extremely frustrating," said Debbie Hall, manager at the Carlyle.
Altogether, more than a dozen rent checks and money orders were stolen. About $7,500 worth was taken at the Carlyle.
The crook is using a chemical to "wash away" the apartment's name on the money orders. Another name is put on the money order so it can be cashed. In the case of checks, the thief is stealing personal and account information.
"We've seen account information used immediately," said Shawnee Major Bill Hisle."There's some money involved. And where there's money involved, people will put a lot of time and effort to steal from others."
Residents hope the apartment complex is taking steps to make the drop boxes more secure. Management at the Carlyle assured that steps are being taken while Pinegate representatives declined comment.
"At least make sure it's secure so they can't get it out of the box," resident Micaela Barber said.
