Gertrude the sea turtle prepares for SEA LIFE debut

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

SEA LIFE Kansas City Aquarium is getting its first endangered sea turtle.

Gertrude will meet the public on Friday and call Kansas City her new home in her 157,000-gallon aquarium at Crown Center.

"We are very excited to bring Gertrude to Kansas City," said Mendy Rose, marketing manager of SEA LIFE Kansas City Aquarium. "We know the residents of Kansas City will fall in love with Gertrude and make her feel at home as our newest exhibit at SEA LIFE in Crown Center."

However, she has had quite a long journey up to this point.

She came from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium inClearwater, FL, where she was rescued in September 2011 after her two front flippers were found tangled in fishing line causing them to fracture.

Gertrude has since healed but because of her injuries, one flipper had to be amputated, and she has no power stroke for speed to flee predators, so cannot be returned to the ocean.
