Lenexa delays zoning vote for new Grinders restaurant

Posted: Updated:
LENEXA, KS (KCTV) -

There is a lot of debate over a new restaurant planned for Lenexa.

There wasn't an empty seat in the house at City Hall Tuesday night, and tempers were flaring during discussion over a new Grinders Roadhouse - a restaurant, bar and concert venue that some say will bring too much noise and congestion to the neighborhood.

Grinders is a popular spot in Kansas City's Crossroads District, but it is not getting the same reception a proposed site near West 103rd Street and Pflumnn Road.

"We've got school kids in the neighborhood. We've got older folks in the neighborhood. We've got babies in the neighborhood," said Debbie Ball, who lives across the street from the proposed site.

Ball is concerned about a plan in which the people behind it asked for a re-zoning of the area to allow for more than four special events permits every year.

To Ball, that means outdoor concerts and more noise in her neighborhood.

"I'm a light sleeper, and this is a different type of noise. The traffic noise is more of a white noise. When you have music, it's one of those things you can get away from if you can hear it," she said.

But Grinders Roadhouse owner Jeff "Stretch" Rumaner says they've got it all wrong.

"Event can be considered everything from a movie night to a wedding or bar mitzvahs, kids' gatherings, soccer clubs getting together, car clubs ... there is a whole bunch of things that can fall under that event line. We are not putting in music. I hate doing music," Rumaner said.

In the end, the city council voted 5-4 to send the application back to the planning commission to further study to issue.

Rumaner welcomed the move.

"I'm glad it went back, so we can try educate everybody in the area. We are really a community-based restaurant, and there is a lot of misinformation out there that we want to educate everybody," he said.

The planning commission will meet March 4 and is open to the public. They will focus on hours of operation, parking space and of course noise concern.
