This is an area of concern for consumers. Used tires can be mounted and balanced safely for everyday use, the concern does come from age and condition. Tires life can stretch as long as 10 years, however conditions that can lead to much shorter life are exposure to temperature and humidity. The tires you brought in appeared to have substantial tread left on them so the decision was made to go ahead and install them on your vehicle. We provide vehicle service to the public and as part of that service , we will put into place a service policy that makes it against our company rules to mount any tire that was manufactured more than 10 years ago, regardless of condition. Tire age is easy to identify by checking the DOT date code, which shows the month and year of manufacture. Our commitment to service is a top priority. In fact, last week a customer had a vehicle in for a transmission issue, while on the lift the technician noticed the tires were due for rotation. Upon closer inspection, the"bead" or area of the tire that seals to the wheel, had started to separate, the problem was this damage was on the inside of the tire, not even noticeable to the customer! We provided the customer a solution and installed 4 new tires, for which they were extremely thankful.
We still have the tire if you are doing a report on tire safety and would like it for a demonstration...the tire LOOKED okay for service.
Thanks for your investigation and commitment to consumer safety,
Rob's Auto Service, Inc.
