A woman hiding in her bathroom furtively called 911 when a burglar began to ransack her bedroom, police said Thursday.
The following day, charges were filed against 19-year-old Yikeem Craddock. He was charged with aggravated burglary, theft and criminal damage.
As officers arrived, the Craddock ran to a nearby medical building where employees and visitors were put on lockdown. Police were able to arrest him without incident.
The homeowner wasn't harmed, police said. Two men were taken into custody. The second person involved was a 13-year-old boy.
About 12:05 p.m. Thursday, a homeowner was inside her home near 105th and Flint streets when she saw strangers in her backyard, Overland Park police said. She then heard a knock on her door. When she didn't answer the door, the man forced his way in.
"One suspect kicked in the door and went inside and went up to the master bedroom ... and started taking stuff," said Overland Park Police Officer Gary Mason.
After the man kicked in the door, the woman ran to her bathroom where she locked herself in and called 911.
Police arrested a second suspect sitting in a car outside the home, acting as a lookout. The suspect inside the house fled the residence and ran to a nearby medical building near 106th Street and Quivira Road.
The building was put on lockdown and officers warned employees and visitors about the man's description. Responding officers arrived quickly and took the man into custody, employees said.
The homeowner was not injured during the burglary. Police praised the woman for keeping her cool during a trying time.
"The homeowner said she was really scared, but she wanted to get us the information and be as quiet as possible. She did a great job," Mason said.
Neighbors who were alarmed by the situation praised police for their rapid response.
Mason said detectives are looking into whether the two men are responsible for a rash of burglaries across the city that may now be solved because of the quick-thinking of one woman in a scary situation.
