Raymore students help send ailing boy to Disney World

RAYMORE, MO (KCTV) -

An entire school is rallying for a young classmate battling a life-threatening illness. Their goal is fulfill his wish of going to Walt Disney World.

One can't tell by looking at 9-year-old Connor Ohlson that he has cancer. The fourth-grader has been living with rare chronic myeloid leukemia for five years. His bone marrow makes too many abnormal white blood cells.

"It started out with a cough, but the cough wouldn't go away, so we had to go to the hospital. They hooked me up with IVs, and that is when I found out I had it," Connor said.

Doctors are treating his disease with daily doses of a chemotherapy drug, but he'll never be cured.

"Every day is a new day, and you embrace it," Connor's mom, Kris Ohlson, said.

Make-A-Wish named Connor the face of its Kids For Wish Kids program, which allows schools to raise money to fulfill the wish of any child battling a life-threatening illness.

Connor's wish has yet to happen, but his classmates at Raymore Elementary want to change that.

Their goal is to raise $5,000 for Connor through drawings and other games that get the whole school involved.

"It is phenomenal looking around and seeing kids without question saying, 'Absolutely, Connor is one of our friends, and we want to rally around him and make sure that we make this dream possible,'" principal Michelle Hofmann said.

But it doesn't stop there. Connor hopes enough money can be raised to grant wishes for others, too.

"I don't think they should go through this. This is pretty hard stuff to go through when you're a kid," he said.

And it is clear that Connor is not going through it alone.

The school is really making the fundraising fun. Some ideas include them buying their own wish-for-a-day, like wearing a hat or chewing gum. Even the principal is getting in on it.

Another idea being tossed around would allow students to donate a dollar to place their vote for which Disney character they want the principal to dress as for the day.

The entire Raymore-Peculiar School District is getting in on the fundraising, too.

If you want to help out, you can make your donations out to:

Raymore Elementary School
Attention: Make A Wish Connor Ohlson
500 S. Madison
Raymore, MO 64083

Once the fundraising is complete, Raymore Elementary will write one big check to Make-A-Wish Foundation.
