Saturday night on CBS a local woman is being featured on the show 48 Hours. Her story is one she's willing to tell for the sole purpose of helping others.
Reading a book is a simple pleasure Marti Hill might never have enjoyed again. On the morning of Sept. 8, 2010, a knock on her door would bring her face-to-face with the unimaginable.
"I know that he thought I had died. That I was left for dead, for sure," Hill said when asked if she thought the man at the door wanted her to die that day.
It was only 7:30 a.m. yet handyman Brian Pennington claimed he needed to show Hill a problem he'd discovered in the basement. Pennington had done work for Hill before.
"I was thinking that maybe he just showed up to see if I had other work, but when I think back, that doesn't make sense. There was no reason for him to come that morning or that early," she said.
Still, Hill lead Pennington to the basement, thinking that he seemed strangely quiet along the way. Suddenly Pennington put his hand on Hill's neck and squeezed. She passed out, but came to, fighting him before he stabbed her multiple times.
"I was cut on my throat," she said. "I know that I've been told that because it was cut so deep, it clotted quickly, and that's what saved my life."
When Hill didn't show up for work, co-workers asked police to conduct a welfare check at her home. That too saved her life because help arrived so fast.
It would be more than a week before Hill regained consciousness.
"There were 10 days in the hospital that I don't remember anything at all. And still don't," she said.
What Hill does remember is her love of kickboxing - something she did before the attack and what is now a source of strength and courage.
She also started a website for survivors like her or any woman looking for tips on safety. She said it keeps her busy and keeps her mind off of that day in September.
"Healing for me is helping others, and I'm just trying to stay focused on that, so it doesn't allow me time to think of those things," Hill said.
The 48 Hours "Live To Tell: The Stranger You Know" airs at 7 p.m.
