Burglaries prompt heightened pet store security

Posted: Updated:

A series of burglaries at high-end pet stores has business owners beefing up security. There have been three thefts this week and police are warning other stores.

"We didn't find anything missing," said Reptiles-N-Reefs owner Darci New. "We are lucky in that sense."

New said her shop was broken into Sunday night. Even though she was already hit, she's installing eight new surveillance cameras.

"I think they have probably cased all of the businesses," New said.

On Tuesday night, police said two Siberian huskies were stolen from Puppy Boutique. On Sunday night, thieves took four puppies from Prince and Princess Pet Shop and then stole four exotic birds from Acrylic Tank Manufacturing.

"Fortunately, it wasn't my store that was hit first," said Greg Bearden, who owns Petland. "I have a bit of a pre-warning."

Bearden said after hearing thieves snatched a Yorkie, he's doing everything he can to make sure he's not the next victim.

"Until this blows over I'm providing an on-site armed security guard at night when nobody is at the store," said Bearden. "I want to protect my property to the best of my ability. God knows what these people are doing with these animals."

Metro said there's a high probability all three burglaries are connected because they involve two male suspects. The suspects are wearing the same clothing and it's the same type of break-in in each instance.

"Someone will recognize these two individuals," said Metro Officer Jose Hernandez. "We are asking people to look at the video. If you have information, if you've heard something please give us a call."

One of the puppies stolen belonged to Las Vegas Strip headliner Criss Angel. He is offering a $5,000 reward for the safe return of the puppies. The four exotic birds were also featured on the Animal Planet's reality show, Tanked.
