Police are searching for a killer who gunned down a barber shop owner inside his store along busy Troost Avenue.
Darrell Williams, 40, was Kansas City's fourth homicide victim in the past 24 hours.
Williams was discovered by a relative of his girlfriend at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, laying on the floor of his barber shop he has owned for more than a decade.
Officers were called to the store near East 31st Street when the discovery was made. Police say they have few clues to go on.
Police did not receive any reports of shots fired or suspicious persons in the area.
For close family and friends, the loss of Williams is profound.
"I don't know why anyone would want to do that to him," friend Lakecia Price said. "This is too senseless. This stuff has got to stop."
Family members are devastated by the inexplicable crime. The victim was the father of a 4-year-old boy, and his girlfriend was rocked to her knees by the news.
His family says the father of three was sweet and laid back, quietly stepping up to help others.
"He did a lot for the community. He would do $5 haircuts on Mondays and Tuesdays, and most barber shops are closed on Mondays," Price said.
"Every time I saw him, he spoke. A real cordial kind of guy, and I hate that it happened to him," said Amir Sharp, the manger of a shop just down the road from Williams' barber shop.
Sharp says the violence along Troost Avenue is nothing new.
"I just deal with it day by day and try to be positive with my customers and hopefully they'll show me the same respect," Shar said.
And he says he feels like it could've just as easily been him, something he says has got to stop.
For now Sharp says his thoughts are with Williams' family, a friend that he saw for the last time Tuesday morning.
"He waved at me like two blocks down the street. Unfortunately, it's the last time I get to say, 'Hey!' to him," Sharp said.
Police are trying to determine whether robbery was a motive. A busy bus stop and popular daycare are in the area, and police are checking surveillance camera footage to see if that can help them make an arrest.
If anyone has any information, they are urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
