Runners go underground for upstanding cause

Posted: Updated:

Thousands of runners from across the country hit the pavement Sunday to help the youngest in the community.

However, the runners are not paying attention to what the weather is doing outside, because the race is being held inside.

With a consistent temperature of 65 to 68 degrees year-round, the Hunt Midwest SubTropolis is the ideal venue for the more than 3,200 runners who participate in this annual Groundhog Run.

The unique run is also believed to be the world's only 5K and 10K sanctioned race that is run completely underground.

Runner's World ranked Kansas City's Groundhog Run as one of the top 65 races in America.

All proceeds raised from the run will go to the Children's Therapeutic Learning Center, directly benefiting more than 500 students throughout Kansas City.

Organizers say the race continues to grow each year.
