A family was able to escape a house fire Friday night, but their home suffered $30,000 in damage.
The fire started about 10:15 p.m. off Roosevelt, near Kimball Avenue. Two adults and three children got out safely and said their dog's barking woke up one of the kids, alerting them to the fire.
A fire investigator said it began in the basement and extended to the first floor and attic area. The flames and smoke caused the structure to become very unstable and crews had to fight it defensively from the outside.
